New Sounds - Ainslie Wills 'Wide Load'

Melbourne songstress Ainslie Wills has released 'Wide Load' an impressive single from her upcoming EP 'Somebody for Everyone', set for release in May.

Wills has experienced national attention before in 2007 when her single 'Green Coloured Glass' earned her a touring spot with Missy Higgins.

'Wide Load' however is a massive step forwards in her sound, sultry vocals and a stripped back bassy rhythm section create a seductive sound that brings to mind a soulful Cat Power.

Around Brisbane - Bonfire Nights

1 girl + 1 boy / guitars + drums = Bonfire Nights. That's the tagline of Bonfire Nights' website, the girl and boy being drummer Ruth Nitkiewicz and guitarist Stephen Foster, Brisbane locals who've formed one of the more exciting new Brisbane bands.

Bonfire Nights rely on a relatively simple sound, flitting sonically between their cited influences like The Raveonettes, The Mess Hall and My Bloody Valentine. They're at their best when mixing their own vocal harmonies with a bigger sound like on their track 'Own Worst Enemy' where at times they come off sounding like a less serious Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

They're scheduled to be playing their first show this coming March 27 at the Troubadour along with releasing an EP in the coming months. Check out 'Own Worst Enemy' below.

Blood Red Shoes Release New Single 'Light It Up'

UK rock duo Blood Red Shoes have released new single 'Light It Up' today, a week before the release of new album 'Fire Like This' on March 1. The video features some particularly grubby looking people, as well as an overly rousing chorus, typical of the bands sound

Of the track, drummer Steve Ansell says:

“To me, 'Light It Up' is like our Pixies formula song, just groove on the verses then smash the distortion up full on the chorus. It's about feeling like everything is about to explode and that you want it to explode. it's about craving for chaos and upheaval and destruction because it might actually change something.”

Around Brisbane - Butcher Birds

Local Brisbane band Butcher Birds are Stacey, Jacinta, Joanna and Donovan, three girls and a guy who are making some of the best music to come out of Brisbane of late. They released their first EP called "Eat Their Young" in 2006, and in October 2009 released their critically acclaimed debut LP, "Set My Bones', which has since gained them recognition from Triple J & Rolling Stone.

The Butcher Birds sound is reminiscent of the 90's grunge/indie rock sound and brings to mind amongst others, Veruca Salt, PJ Harvey, Sonic Youth and The Breeders. So if you're into 90's fuzz rock fronted by female vocals you should definitely have a listen.

Rapture to Release New Album 'June/July'

The Rapture have revealed that their new album will be "100 times better than the iPad".

Currently working on the follow-up to 2006's 'Pieces Of People We Love' in Paris, the New York band are hoping the album will be released in the summer.

"We're cruising through the process," Gabe Andruzzi told Pitchfork. "If everything goes well we'd love to have this album out by June or July".

Working with Phoenix producer Phillipe Zdar, Andruzzi also gave an insight on how the album is developing.

"Being in Paris makes the whole process seem kind of mysterious, a little magical," he explanied. "It's going to be a mystical, magical album. I tell him that "mystical, magical" reminds me of Steve Jobs introducing the iPad".

He added jokingly: "Our new album's gonna be fucking 100 times better than the iPad, with this record you're going to be interfacing with your soul in ways that have never happened before."

New Sounds - Big Scary

After releasing debut single 'Hey Somebody' in November last year Melbourne two-piece Big Scary managed to garner national airplay from Triple J. From their the band has has continued success, including having 'The Weight' shortlisted for Triple J's Hottest 100, and will be releasing their debut full lenghth EP 'At the Mercy of the Elements' on February 26.

'Hey Somebody' may have been the song that grabbed peoples attention with its raucous fuzzed out sound but Big Scary has a much wider range than just straight up rock n' roll. Band members Jo and Tom are both multi-instrumentalists and it shows as their songs range from bravado driven rockers like 'Hey Somebody' to stripped back, heartbroken, piano driven ballads.

Sounds of Brisbane - Last Dinosaurs - EP Launch

Brisbane's own indie-popster's Last Dinosaurs are set to mark the release of their debut EP 'Back from the Dead' on February 26 with a show at The Old Museum.

Brothers Sean and Lachlan Caskey front the band as guitarists whilst Dan Koyama and Sam Gethin-Jones take on the drums and bass respectively in a line-up that has generated considerable buzz on the local music scene.

Much of the band’s appeal lies in the spritely, youthful guitar pop, as their instruments slither purposefully over and around each other. Triple j were quick to tag them as a promising act with demo “Honolulu” earning them the Triple j Unearthed tick of approval way back in February 2009. The Last Dinosaurs live show has also been hard to ignore, highlighted as one of the most talked about shows at Brisbane’s 2009 Big Sound Showcase by JMag.

New Sounds - Two Door Cinema Club

If you've so far managed to escape U.K./Irish buzz band Two Door Cinema Club it's about to get a whole lot harder with their debut album 'Tourist History'hitting Australian shores on February 26th.

If you are one of the few that have managed to elude the sounds of single 'I Can Talk' to date Two Door Cinema Club are an an Irish electropop, indie rock band, compared sonically by many to early Bloc Party and Maximo Park. However in saying that lead singer Alex Trimbles' vocals are far more lightweight than the usual brit dance rock bands. This difference doesn't prove a hinderance though as Trimbles' voice play an integral role in the Two Door Cinema Club sound as their songs largely rely on fast, heavy beats mixed with honeysweet vocals. Eliot James, who co-produced the last Kaiser Chiefs album, took lead on the album.

'Hot Cake'
'Y.F.O.C./Slippy Floor'
'Chino'
'Funnel Of Love'
'Weather Report 2'

BRMC - Conscience Killer

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club have released a new track, Conscience Killer from their upcoming album Beat the Devil's Tattoo. Enjoy.

New Sounds - The Black Belles

Jack White's been a busy man. Not only has he had time to form three bands but in the recent past he's also discovered and produced a new act for this record label, The Black Belles. The Black Belles, a group about whom little is known except that they were assembled by White, feature Nashville burlesque model Erin Belle and have a fondness for slightly medieval-looking wide-brimmed hats. It's possible that the Belles might sound a little too like the White Stripes for some but if you enjoy some simple kick drum smashing backed by some textured electro-organ, crunchy guitar, and female vocals then you should find something worthwhile with their sound.

Here's the bands first single 'What Can I Do'

Album News - Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand have started writing new material for their fourth album, frontman Alex Kapranos has confirmed.

The Scottish singer/guitarist told BBC 6music that he and guitarist Nick McCarthy had been working on new songs at McCarthy's house for the follow-up to last year's 'Tonight… Franz Ferdinand' effort.

"I've been round at Nick's and we've been writing some things, and trying to do things in a different way again," he explained. "You'll hear it before too long."

The band are set to begin their Australian tour later this month

Around the World - Starlite Desperation

MMB Approved is a segment dedicated to bands My Music Brisbane wholeheartedly supports. These bands may be new, old, popular, obscure, together, broken up, reformed, deformed, malformed or even dead but in all cases their music has something. Something good.

Starlite Desperation is/was a rock band originally from Monterey, California. Combining elements of garage rock, punk, psychedelic music, goth rock, post punk, glam rock and 60's Pop. They released three full length records, 1 EP, and 3 singles, on several labels, including Gold Standard Laboratories.

The band found relatively little success and eventually disbanded in 2008, but not before having toured with the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club ,The Rapture, The International Noise Conspiracy, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Dirtbombs, The Ponys , and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

New Sounds - Lanterns

Is there a 90's music revival going on? It's been suggested for awhile now and US band Lanterns have planted both feet in the 90's with their debut EP 'Apocalypse Youth'. Most of Lantern's songs are reminiscent of 90's alt rock and in particular 90's indie darlings Pavement. That's not to say they're an exact replica or even an adequate imitation but if you're into fuzzy 90's indie guitar rock with a joyful tone then you might just like Lantern.

New Sounds - The Soft Pack

The Soft Pack are a US band who've just released their self titled debut album The Soft Pack.

The songs on The Soft Pack are big and accessible with no bullshit song structures and some of the best bass lines going on right now. There's no doubt this band's mined alot of their sound from the likes of the Replacements, the Ramones and every other band that has ever gleefully doubled up guitar parts and vocal harmonies. But that's no bad thing as they've recorded a solid debut along with a possible hit single in 'C'mon'.

Broken Social Scene Album Scheduled for May

Broken Social Scene have announced that they will release their next studio album in May. The Canadian collective's new album, which will be their fifth and is as yet untitled, will be released on May 3. It will be the follow-up to their 2005 self-titled effort.

The album was produced by John McEntire of Tortoise at Chicago's Soma Studios, with further sessions at Giant Studios and The Schvitz Studio in Toronto.

Album News - Kaiser Chiefs, MGMT

Everybody's favourite band from Leeds, Kaiser Chiefs has returned to the studio to begin recording their next album. Frontman Ricky Wilson revealed the band "needed to get bored" in order to rediscover their hunger for writing new music.

"After a couple of months we got bored," Ricky Wilson told BBC. "Then I got really bored, then mind-numbingly bored and that's when you start thinking about the fact you want to get up and do something again."

Unfortunately there's currently no release date set for the album so fans will just have to cross their fingers.

Electro popsters MGMT have provided further details on their follow up album to 'Oracular Spectacular'. Their new album will be titled 'Congratulations' and is scheduled for release in early April this year.

The tracklisting has also been announced

'It's Working'
'Song for Dan Treacy'
'Someone's Missing'

'Brian Eno'
'Lady Dada's Nightmare'
'Congratulations'

New Sounds - The Magic Wands

The Magic Wands are a band set to break through this year after receiving an excellent response to their 2009 EP Magic & Dreams. Chris and Dexy Valentine draw heavily on influences like the Jesus and Mary Chain and have a sound that is instantly like-able and totally sugar sweet dreamy danceable pop sprinkled with dirty guitars. They're reportedly recording their debut album in a San Franciscan studio before release later this year.

New Sounds - Tweak Bird

Tweak Bird are brothers Ashton and Caleb (Big Bird and Little Bird, respectively), a US based duo who play a raucous brand of rock and roll, big beats, bigger riffs and eerie, high-pitched vocals. They released their first EP Reservations in 2009 and reportedly have a full albums worth of songs ready to go this year. No news on whether they'll make it over to Australia but if they do we'll be in for a damn good show.

New Album Pre-Order B.R.M.C - 'Beat the Devil's Tattoo'

American rockers Black Rebel Motorcycle club have announced that their new album 'Beat the Devil's Tattoo' is available for pre-order through iTunes, along with a free download of new single 'Beat the Devil's Tattoo'. The album is scheduled for release on March 8th.

Album News - The Dead Weather, Them Crooked Vultures, The Strokes

The Dead Weather's Jack White told Triple J that the bands new album will be out at as soon as April. White added that the record was "bluesier and heavier than we ever thought we could be" and stated that the first single, 'Blue Blood Blues', would see him take on vocal duties instead of Alison Mosshart.

Them Crooked Vultures appear to have another album on the way with bassist John Paul Jones having said that the band expect to have their second album out before 2010 is up.

As reported by NME, The Strokes are entering the studio this month to start work on their fourth album. Both U2 and Beck are reported to be producing.

Eddy Current Suppresson Ring - Rush to Relax

Melbourne rockers Eddy Current Suppression Ring are set to release their third full-length album, 'Rush to Relax' on February 19. Their previous effort 'Primary Colors' received vast critical acclaim from the likes of Buddyhead, The Guardian and The Australian Independent Record Labels Association.

If you haven't heard them already these guys play punk rock that's basically a cross between the dirty sound of the Pyscho Surgeons and Radio Birdman, and the cleaner stuff of the Saints and Numbers, some of the best punk bands Australia ever produced, so you know this stuff is good.

The lead track off the new album, 'Anxiety' has made its way out and as expected its a loud rowdy mess. Brendan Suppression is his usual agitated self, blurting out lines about his anxiety racked life whilst Rob Solid, Eddy Current and Danny Current put together a sound that's more surf rock than much of their previous work.

Full Tracklisting:

1. Anxiety
2. I've Got a Feeling
3. Tuning Out
4. Gentleman
5. Walked Into a Corner
6. Second Guessing
7. I Can Be a Jerk

9. Burn
10. Rush to Relax
